Having a second opportunity to work on this home after winning a National Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award in 2007 doesn’t happen often.

Our second opportunity with a new homeowner took the project to a new level of design and detail.  This home, a two-time National CotY Award winning project (2007 and 2018) as a Historical Renovation is a well-known local landmark, “The Red House”, built in the 1860s as a farm home.  The new owner liked the multi-generational layout of the ‘07 house and wanted to expand on it.  Maintaining the historical nature and setting of the existing structures was of paramount importance.  The design mimics a complex of buildings that would grow over time as the farm would grow and change over generations.  Three barn structures are incorporated as garages to maintain the agricultural style.  A sandstone paver courtyard was created including a pool and pool house nestled between the east and west wings.

Reclaimed barn beams accent the ceilings, all period style cabinets and built-ins are custom made with antique painted finishes, installed wood floors from reclaimed tobacco barn siding in new areas, original 1860s ash flooring in the main house was salvaged and refinished, slate tile flooring is used in the bathrooms and laundry/mud rooms, all countertops are hand cut soapstone, and wood trim details including pegboards and reclaimed barn siding are used throughout the home.  Maintaining the focus on the original “Red House” was very important to the homeowner and the community.  Historically the farm house would expand and grow as the needs arose. We approached this project with the same sense of necessity.
